A few months ago, the New York Times spirits panel tasted through 20 bottles of Rye, and ended with a list of 10 to recommend. Having pulled together a group of whiskey from mainstream producers and small craft distilleries, we were tickled to see the distillery behind shop favorite Dorothy Parker Gin had scored the #1 indie Rye spot, beating out popular brands like Bulleit and Rittenhouse! NY Distilling’s Ragtime Rye was the winner, and lucky for us it had just arrived in California.
While the times noted a “sweetly fruity, spicy and complex” whiskey, Ragtime also has a softness to it that is hard to come by in Rye. I was totally enchanted with its performance as a sipper, particularly with a floral quality that made me think of earl grey tea lightly sweetened with honey. And production is legit. It is distilled in Brooklyn from non-GMO Rye and Corn grown in New York State, 72% and 16% respectively, with 12% malted barley making up the remainder. It is aged in full-size barrels for approximately 3.5 years, and bottled at 90.4 Proof. Despite being one of our most mature craft whiskies, it’s also one of the most attractively priced at $44.5 a bottle.
