W.B. Saffell Kentucky Bourbon

$52.50
Born on August 28, 1843, William Butler Saffell began distilling as a teenager. In 1889 he built his own 350 barrel distillery on the Southern Railroad in the northwest of Lawrenceburg, KY. With his grit, determination and reputed hand-made sour mash, his delicate, golden Kentucky Bourbon became a treasure of pre-prohibition America, and he himself became a notoriously successful "whiskey baron" of the era.
His original Lawrenceburg, KY distillery is now long shuttered, but the town's most famous distillery, Wild Turkey, is still thriving, and in a tribute to their erstwhile neighbors they have attempted to recreate the character of Saffell's Bourbon for this limited release, based partly on surviving historical documents about the whiskey, and partly on educated guesses about local whiskey-making practices of the pre-prohibition era. A blend of 6, 8, 10, and 12 year un-chill filtered bourbons, this beautifully illustrates what we have come to associate with big pre-prohibition, high proof, straight from the barrel flavor, which Saffell's whiskey was famous for.

On the nose you'll find burnt caramel, vanilla bean, molasses, charred oak, brown sugar, clove, blood orange, nutmeg, cinnamon, hints of sweet & savory herbal spice. The palate is big and rich, with vanilla extract, maple syrup, sweet oak char, pecan glaze, ginger beer, apple peel, nutmeg, and faint leather. The finish goes on and on, with black pepper, licorice, citrus peel, and sweet herbs waving you goodbye, and maybe inviting you back for another sip. Bottled at 53.5% abv.
