Foursquare 2013 Barbados Habitation Velier Rum
This wild young hooligan of a rum is truly one of a kind. The first ever 100% pot still rum released from Barbados's beloved Foursquare Distillery, it's a collaboration between master distiller Richard Seale and Velier's Luca Gargano, designed to showcase the potential of the young, untamed pot still rum. Aged just under 3 years in ex-cognac casks (!) and bottled at a whopping 64%, this is quite a different beast than the well aged pot-column blends that we are all used to coming out of Foursquare.
It starts with an exciting and beguiling nose, with aromas of vanilla and warm baking spice alongside savory and salty olive, black pepper, anise, and almost threatening industrial notes. It's all over the place, and the palate is even wilder. There is the familiar Foursquare fruit, from plums and peaches to apples, and then more salty savoriness. Anise and that rubbery industrial brooding are there, but all wrapped in a wonderfully pleasant envelope of lightly honeyed sweetness that keeps you coming back. That overtly pleasant quality is enhanced by adding a bit of water to the beast, opening it up just a bit, but never fully taming it.
