This whisky was born during a time when the iconic Ardbeg Distillery name was almost consigned to the history books. Its release marks a period of struggle for the Islay distillery, which closed for much of the 1980s and operated only sporadically in the 1990s. The spirit used for the bottling was distilled during Ardbeg’s final year of operation before being acquired by the Glenmorangie Company in 1997.
This 1996 vintage malt was distilled in the now retired still that rests in the distillery courtyard, matured in ex-Bourbon casks, and bottled at 46.4% abv. On the nose, luscious tropical fruits fade into sweet smoke, soot and tar. Take a sip and discover fresh green apples with a crumble topping. Notes of peppermint tea and vanilla guide you towards a long smoky finish.
