Savanna Reunion HERR 2019 Habitation Velier Rum
The island of Réunion, just east of Madagascar in the Indian Ocean, is one of France's oft overlooked overseas departments, just like Martinique or Guadeloupe. And much like those departments, it has its own robust history of rum-making, but unlike the more famous departments, it specializes in molasses rum rather than the cane juice rum generally associated with the French style. The Distillerie de Savanna is located in Saint-André, a community of 55,000 inhabitants on the north coast of La Réunion.
This bottling of the HERR marque (High Ester Rum Reunion), is bottled at full strength right off the still, showcasing the full aromatic intensity of this style of rum. A bevy of fermented fruit aromas envelop you immediately, along with some grass, olives, and a hint of fresh berry sweetness. More funky fruit greets you on the palate and finish, with pineapple up front, followed with a lovely herbal quality. Savory and welcoming, but loud.
