Bunnahabhain 18 Year Single Malt Scotch
The Bunnahabhain distillery, founded in 1881 near Port Askaig, is the gentle giant of Islay, foregoing the heavily peated style the island is most famous for in favor of something more nuanced and balanced, yet decidedly characterful. The 18 year is aged in a combination of ex-bourbon and ex-sherry casks and is bottled without chill filtration or added coloring at 46.3%
On the nose there is salted caramel leading to sticky toffee pudding sprinkled with nutmeg. With time a leathery quality emerges. The palate is dense and richly sherried with a coastal saltiness. On a second wave roast chestnuts emerge and gentle wood spice. The finish is warming and lengthy; salt and sherry towards the very end.
