Maker's Mark Distillery in Loretto, Kentucky has been churning out a steady supply of wheated bourbon (and nothing else) since its founding in 1953. They may occasionally vary the color of their wax by the season but what’s in the bottle of this red winter wheated bourbon hasn’t changed much in 66 years. Starting in October 2018 the distillery started offering Maker’s Mark 101 proof bottles exclusively at global travel retail, and have now released it as a non travel exclusive limited edition release.
Maker’s says, “It’s fully matured Maker’s Mark bottled at 101 proof, which is the way Bill Samuels, Sr. would serve his personal guests at the distillery, showing off his signature bourbon in a bit bolder presentation than the 90 proof of regular Maker’s Mark.”
On the nose, apple, vanilla, and caramel swirl together to create an inviting and pleasing aroma. It's a touch sweet at first sip, and then quickly transitions into a spicy and oak filled palate. Burnt caramel, vanilla, butterscotch, and toasted nut round out its flavor profile.
