First distilled and marketed in the 1880s, the Fortuna brand has been revived by Pablo Moix and Peter Nevenglosky, co-founders of Rare Character Whiskey, and Andy Shapira, whose family owns Heaven Hill. The modern version of Fortuna is sourced from an undisclosed Kentucky distillery. Barrels are aged for at least six years before blending and bottling at 102 proof. On the nose, rye spice is prominent, backed by green apple, citrus, and oak. The palate opens with a splash of citrus before transitioning to caramel and milk chocolate. The rye spice ramps up on the back of the palate and holds through the finish, where it is joined by tobacco and oak flavors.
