Foursquare Exceptional Cask Mark XV "Redoutable" 14 Year Rum
But the really exciting thing about this release are the casks used. This, like all Foursquare rums, is a blend of pot and column distillates, which are blended after distillation. In this case, they then sat in either bourbon or Madeira casks for the whole 14 years before being blended together, rather than the 'finishing' practice more commonly seen. So you aren't getting a 14 year bourbon barrel aged rum that was briefly placed in madeira casks to make it sexier, but rather a marriage of two fully matured rums. Madeira cask maturation is nowhere near as common as sherry or even port, but is quickly becoming the most sought after style of wine aging, for those that have been paying attention. Last year Foursquare released their 'Sagacity', aged in the same combination of casks, but for 12 years, and bottled at 48%. For many, that was an all time favorite Foursquare release that put Madeira aged spirits on their radar. To see them back so soon with an even older and cask strength version is exciting indeed.
On the nose, you get classic Foursquare vanilla and coconut, along with some sherry-like elements of dried fruit and spice, but more direct and sitting alongside fresh tropical fruits. Citrus zest, orange and lemon, and a musty dry oak character all finish it off. On the palate, this is a big one, with lots of oak sitting in front (with a bit of water this isn't quite as intense), followed by dark fruit, cranberry, red wine, dark chocolate, and raisin. On the finish, a smoky note emerges from the oakiness, with more deep wine notes and chocolate. Redoutable indeed.
