Hazelburn 13 Year Oloroso Single Malt Scotch
Hazelburn, the "other other" malt whisky produced at Campbeltown's Springbank Distillery, is produced in a style rarely seen in Scotland, with it's triple distillation being more typically Irish in style. It is also completely unpeated, showing a much gentler and subtle side to Springbank's stellar malt.
This is the 4th annual release of the Hazelburn Sherrywood and, as normal, it is 100% oloroso sherry cask matured, lending a deep dark fruitiness and nutty quality to the full but gentle and understated Hazelburn signature. Distilled in June 2007, bottled September 2020 after aging for 13 years at 50.3% ABV.
The nose presents juicy red grapes, raspberries and redcurrants followed by stewed strawberries and mint humbugs. Upon first sip, there is initially a rich sweetness of marzipan, prunes and raisins, developing into orange rind, dark chocolate and vanilla cheesecake. The finish brings out red apple, digestive biscuits, wholemeal toast, black cherries and almonds.
