L'Encantada 20 Year Selection Armagnac
L'Encantada is an independent bottler that started as a bunch of Armagnac loving friends who decided to do something about the fact that there was so much great undiscovered brandy consistently just being sold to negociants (large non producer houses) to be hidden away in boring, young, watered down blends. So they started offering small estates a premium to retain some of their stock as single barrel, cask strength selections for them to bottle in their natural state, without any additives. They quickly made quite a name for themselves, showcasing impressive vintages from previously unknown estates, true Armagnac nerds' Armagnac.
Their 20 year selection is a cask strength (47.2%) blend of four Armagnacs aged at least 20 years, from 3 different estates, including all 4 grapes allowed in Armagnac production: Ugni Blanc, Folle Blanche, Baco, and Colombard. Expect aromas of caramel, wood spice, orange zest, and honeyed stone fruit. The palate is drier than the super lush nose would lead one to believe, with savory and woody qualities in the forefront. Smoky wood, forest floor, and a refreshing reprisal of orange zest are the stars on the finish. Exciting but balanced. It's as if the folks at L'encantada wanted to demonstrate just what a blend should be.
