Mars Tsunuki Peated Single Malt Japanese Whisky

$244.50

This single malt whisky from the Mars Tsunuki Distillery in Kagoshima is one of the few heavily peated Japanese whiskies on the market. It was distilled in 2016 and bottled in 2020, aging for 4 years in ex-bourbon and a small amount of ex-sherry casks. This is just the second release from the newly reopened Tsunuki Distillery, which is located in the southern prefecture of Kagoshima from which the Hombo family originally hails. The weather in this area is notably more humid than that of the Shinshu distillery in Nagano, and has greater fluctuation in temperature , which offers compelling diversity to the Mars lineup.

With peat levels of 20 & 50 parts per million, Tsunuki Peated reads much like a peated Highland Scotch. A nose of smoked maple syrup, wet campfire, and dried apricot preps the palate for prominent peat and a note of sandalwood. The drying finish confidently displays browned butter, stemmy herbs, wet gravel, and a hint of menthol. Bottled at 50% abv.
