Root beer has a distinctive, nostalgic, transportive power in the American psyche. It's really a quite complex flavor profile, but it immediately reminds one of yesteryear, for many - of simpler times. Soda shops, leaving your front door open and bicycle rides through the neighborhood, it's an indelible icon of the American mythos. The flavor profile is also a match made in heaven with American whiskey, especially the spice, rich grain, and vanilla notes of Rye.
Pink House Alchemy is a producer of syrups, bitters and shrubs in northwestern Arkansas. For their Sarsaparilla Bitters, they use Sarsaparilla that grows in the local hills and forests of the Ozarks - biting, rich, earthy, and distinctly root beer-y, just a couple dashes go a long way in a drink.
To complement the earthy flavor of the Sarsaparilla bitters, we also went to Pink House for their Vanilla Bean syrup to bring extra sweetness, another essential Root Beer character note. Pink Houses uses entire Madagascar vanilla beans by scraping the seeds from the peels by hand. The little black specks in the bottle are the seeds from the pods and bring extra flavor to the syrup. The syrup also goes great in coffee!
When it comes to the Rye at the center of the drink, we came back to an old favorite that is hard to beat in a cocktail - Knob Creek Rye, which is now bottled with a 7 year age statement, bringing some extra oak, richness, and depth to their classic profile of spice and herbs, with sweet vanilla, and spiced cherry. Perfect for a Root Beer Old Fashioned! Cheers!
