Russell's Reserve Private Barrel "Hazel's Pick" Bourbon
Wild Turkey created The Russell’s Reserve label in 2000 as a limited edition bottling to honor Jimmy Russell, who began sweeping floors at the distillery in 1954 before going on to learn the craft from Wild Turkey’s second master distiller, Bill Hughes. It is made with the classic Wild Turkey mash bill - 75% corn, 13% rye and 12% malted barley and all single barrel versions are bottled at 110 proof and non-chill filtered to preserve maximum flavor. This Russell’s Reserve Private Barrel Selection was distilled in 2009 and aged for nearly 10 years in rickhouse A of the off-site Camp Nelson, near Four Roses, which Wild Turkey acquired from Seagrams about 20 years ago. Barrels from Camp Nelson are known and loved for their distinct spicy profile, giving that wonderful Wild Turkey kick of wood spice. This barrel was originally selected by SF's Hazel Southern Bar & Kitchen, who unfortunately had to turn it down due to being a restaurant in these wild times we all find ourselves living in. But a good turkey should never go to waste, and we are happy to be able to offer yet another fantastic barrel of Russell's.
Toffee is big on the aroma, with oak, cherry, clove, cinnamon, and vanilla extract backing it up. On the palate there is green apple, sweet plantains, orange peel, clove, pepper, and slightly drying wood spice that tampers the sweetness just enough. The high proof comes across as a lovely warmth, not too harsh, just right for that Kentucky hug. The finish has more apple, creamy vanilla, and lingering peppery tingle. We always recommend Russell's Reserve when someone wants to know what this bourbon thing is all about, or when an experienced drinker needs some comfort and a palate reset, and this one is no exception.
