Woodford Reserve Straight Wheat Whiskey
After Prohibition, the federal government permitted four styles of American straight whiskey, each with a different majority grain – bourbon, rye, wheat and malt. Woodford Reserve now has all four whiskeys as part of its permanent family of brands. This one showcases wheat as the dominant grain – but just barely at 52%, followed by malt (20%), corn (20%) and rye (8%).
The nose is soft and fruity with peach pie, cinnamon, and hay. On the palate, flavors of oak, pure wheat grain, and a hint of vanilla are immediate and dominate over any fruitiness the nose implied. The finish brings some of the fruit back, with white pepper, oak, and hints of dried apple and peaches leading the charge. Light, but lovely. Bottled at 90. 4 proof.
