For this Heritage Round of private barrel picks, we selected on site at three of the most storied names in bourbon — Woodford Reserve, Old Forester, and Wild Turkey.
From cracking the code on cask-strength double-oaked bourbon to uncovering hidden depth in a middle-floor single barrel and picking blind alongside bourbon royalty, this lineup showcases some of the most sought-after private barrels in the country today.
Woodford Reserve Double Oaked — Cask Strength Private Barrel
Woodford Reserve occupies a unique space in the modern whiskey landscape. They make excellent bourbon and pioneered the iconic "double oaked" style, yet enthusiasts often overlook them due to their standard 90.4 proof lineup. Even standout special releases like Double Double Oaked and the Master's Collection are diluted down to that strength. Historically, the only way to taste an uncut Woodford was hunting down an elusive and expensive Batch Proof bottle — until now.
As long-time fans of Woodford Double Oaked, we jumped at the chance to select a private barrel bottled at cask strength. The whiskey is aged in heavily charred new American oak barrels before re-casking in a second, lightly charred and heavily toasted oak barrel. Bottled completely undiluted at 96.38 proof, that extra kick turns a pleasant, sweet sipper into a decadent flavor bomb.
- Nose: Rich maple syrup, toasted oak, cocoa, fruit leather, crème brûlée, and dark caramel.
- Palate: Full-bodied and loaded with honey, cinnamon toast crunch, Nutella, sweet cream, toasted marshmallow, vintage leather, and charred oak.
- Finish: Lingering fudgesicle, sweet cream, caramel, and milk chocolate.
How do they achieve this unique cask strength? When the whiskey is re-casked into the second barrel, it is intentionally proofed down to 100. This process is purposeful: the rich wood sugars created by the second barrel's heavy toast are water-soluble. Adding water before the finish allows the whiskey to aggressively extract those sweet, wood-forward flavors without high alcohol heat overpowering the profile. If you want a rich, decadent pour that relies on pure flavor rather than raw heat, this bottle is for you.
Old Forester — Floor 5, Warehouse J, 129.6 Proof
When selecting single barrels, you often have an idea of what the "expected pick" looks like. During our trip to Old Forester in downtown Louisville, we found that exact profile in a barrel from Floor 8 of Warehouse G — a quintessential, top-floor whiskey packing the bold and borderline aggressive heat the brand has become famous for. Then we tasted a barrel from Floor 5 of Warehouse J, a middle floor whiskey that showcased so much more. It still delivered that signature Old Forester heat and thick, viscous syrupiness, but with just enough restraint to let even more depth and character step into the spotlight. By trading away a fraction of that raw alcohol intensity, incredible richness was gained, unlocking a deliciously complex, herbaceous, and spicy side of the profile that is often buried. Ultimately, it made the Floor 5 barrel the clear choice.
And don't let the word "restrained" fool you — this barrel was still bottled at a roaring 129.6 proof. It is Old Forester, after all.
- Nose: Cinnamon roll, date syrup, caramel, peppercorn, and rye spice, anchored by background notes of green herbs, oak, and a touch of mint.
- Palate: Full-bodied and evolving, featuring molasses, apple cider donut, cinnamon sugar, sweetened green tea, and rich date syrup.
- Finish: Long and lingering, with berry compote, cinnamon sugar, rye spice, and oak dancing across the tongue.
Russell's Reserve — Barrel #25-1533, Camp Nelson Warehouse D, Floor 4
It is always exciting to select a barrel of Wild Turkey's Russell's Reserve, but it is a true honor to do so alongside one of the Russells themselves. Bruce Russell — Master Distiller and heir to Wild Turkey's legendary distilling legacy — joined our team to pick this private single barrel.
During our selection, we evaluated five distinct barrels completely blind. When the reveal came, our top choice was barrel #25-1533, pulled from Floor 4 of Camp Nelson Warehouse D — yet another mark in the win column for this legendary rickhouse location. Situated off-site along the Kentucky River, the Camp Nelson campus is famous for its unique microclimate and intense air circulation, which consistently yield some of the richest, most complex single barrels in Wild Turkey's portfolio. Distilled on January 24, 2017, and dumped on June 29, 2026, this bourbon spent 9 years and 5 months aging on those storied grounds before bottling at 110 proof.
This barrel amps up everything we love about Wild Turkey bourbon, delivering classic "Wild Turkey funk" alongside a seamless balance of sweet pastry, dark fruit, and deep, earthy spice. It's no wonder both Bruce and our team fell in love with it.
- Nose: Musty oak, earthen warehouse, rich leather, stewed fruits, black pepper, clove, and caramel.
- Palate: Morning bun, Biscoff cookie, dark cherry, leather, and musty oak.
- Finish: Dark fruit, leather, black pepper, and slightly drying oak.
