Lucero (formerly Luneta) bottles expressions that are made with wild and semi-cultivated agaves, crafted in various states and by different mezcaleros, each with unique techniques and flavor profiles. The emphasis is on quality and individuality, the beauty of imperfection that comes with hand made creations, and the people that bring their craft to the world.
Our favorite mezcalera that Lucero has worked with is Berta Vasquez. It's always exciting to hear that a new Berta batch is coming, and we usually try to get our hands on as much as we can. Berta is from the Zapotec village of San Baltazar Chichicapam, Oaxaca, where she learned to make mezcal from her grandfather. After marrying a fellow mezcalero who tragically passed away suddenly, she was left to support her household and children on her own. Already deeply familiar with the ins and outs of production, Berta took on the mantle of master mezcalera to make ends meet. Today, she is revered as one of the most renowned mezcal producers in the region—and is a true local legend in Chichicapam.
But Berta's mezcal is so much more than a powerful story—it is consistently some of the greatest distillate we've ever tasted, time and time again. Her Tepeztate releases are always a favorite, and this batch is no exception. Tepeztate (Agave marmorata) takes around 25 years to mature in the wild and is prized for its rare balance of earthy minerality and citrusy fruitiness, offering a welcoming entry backed by incredible depth. Of course, unlocking that complexity isn't just up to the agave; it takes the careful, steady hands of a master mezcalera.
On the nose, there is a pronounced minerality—reminiscent of wet river stones—paired delightfully with juicy notes of grapefruit and melon, candied papaya, and a distinct whisper of classic Italian grappa. It is equally rich on the palate, bursting with more grapefruit zest, a hint of vanilla, and lush tropical fruits. On the savory side, you'll find green pepper, wood-fired pizza crust, and a touch of smoked meat, all wrapped up in that signature minerality. It is dangerously drinkable—enjoyable pour after pour. Coming in at 47.4% ABV, it offers a full, robust body that never feels dominated by alcohol. Robust yet elegant—classic Berta. We can't wait for you to try this one.
