In continuous operation since 1749, Appleton Estate is the refined, experienced older woman of the Jamaican Rum scene. Their 12 year old is a rich and complex blend of pot and column still rums, all aged for a minimum of 12 years before being selected in the cask by master blender Joy Spence, then blended to create this classic, beloved expression of what Jamaican rum can achieve when given time and care. Bottled at 43% abv, and as with all Appleton rums, without any added sugar, flavorings, or adulterants.
Aromas of caramel, coffee, leather, banana, and orange zest greet you, lightly tickling the nose. On the palate there is a surprising initial hint of fruity pot still funk, enveloped by dark chocolate and hazelnut. Incredibly full bodied, the 43% drinks like something decidedly more concentrated. The time in oak has developed a punchy spice element alongside the expected vanilla, complementing the continuing nutty chocolate flavors. The finish is long and round with a twinge of bitter coffee.

I use Appleton Estate 12 in combination with Smith & Cross for my Mai Tais. Fantastic blend of flavors. Kudos to Martin Cate for calling out this combination.

This was incredibly good. Tried it neat and it definitely has a decent amount of the Jamaican rum funk present (but not all encompassing like the really funky Jamaican rums) but also has some really classic rum notes that play really well together. A really good night time sipper but also not so expensive that you feel bad trying it in some cocktails. I paired it with a small amount of Smith and Cross to make some mai tai's!
Really nice aged rum. Good for beginners as an introduction to drinking rum neat. Essential ingredient in my personal mai tai recipe: 1oz lime juice, 0.5oz orgeat, 0.5oz orange curacao, 1oz Appleton 12, 1oz Hampden Estate.
Wonderful product. Not readily available in the Bay Area.
This is a great rum to keep stocked... it is a good introduction to rum for friends and to keep around for a nightcap or evening sipper.
Easy drinking and a great value!
Appleton never disappoints. A beautiful expression from them.
