Auchentoshan is one of the few Lowland distilleries, in the southern part of Scotland just over the border with England. The style produced here is a lighter distillate than most single malts, with a triple distillation instead of the usual two. This is the norm in Ireland, but rarely seen in Scotland (Springbank's unpeated Hazelburn malt being another rare example). The Three-Wood moniker refers to the casks used in maturation: Bourbon, Oloroso Sherry and Pedro Ximenez Sherry. The result is sweet dried-fruit flavors that fade into a lingering, luscious caramel finish.
