Product details
From the house most famous for their Antica Formula vermouth and bittered Punt e Mes, Carpano Botanic Bitter is the product of a careful selection of ten aromatic herbs that are infused in the traditional method to reach a balanced taste: saffron, sandalwood, fresh green orange peel, bitter orange peel, cinchona, rhubarb, zedoria, gentian, myrrh and wormwood. The assertive bitterness is balanced out with 150g of sugar per litre, which is significantly less than its rivals (can you guess who we're talking about?) which come in closer to 300g per litre. This creates a freshness and lightness that is quite welcome, and lets the herbal qualities shine through beautifully. Diet Negroni, anyone?
- Much less syrupy and more complex. Makes for a negroni with greater depth and lighter body.
- Fantastic alternative - significantly less sweet. Great with soda, on the rocks, and in cocktails.
- Lower sugar profile makes it a plus

I love using alternatives to Campari for Negronis and boulevardiers, but bruto americano is the superior substitute in my opinion. Bruto is more herbal and interesting, the carpano is mostly sweet tasting.
Much less syrupy and more complex than Campari. The lower sugar content also makes it easier to drink and recover from than Campari. it is less citrusy than Campari but makes up for it with a really nice woodiness. A bit bracing but less intensely bracing than Bruto Americano (which I also love) so it is quite a bit more versatile. Makes for a negroni with greater depth and lighter, more refreshing body. Amazing in a grapefruit radler. Agreed that it is a bit medicinal but I like that. These things were developed for medicinal properties anyway.
Slight medicine after taste. But the lower sugar profile makes it a plus
This is a fantastic Campari alternative – significantly less sweet, and less piercingly bitter. Great with soda, on the rocks, and in cocktails. In particular it can also sub in for Aperol in a Paper Plane if you want something a bit more assertive.
My problem with most of the alt red bitters is that they aren’t bitter enough...you have to use more to make the perfect Negroni/Negroni variation. Hard Pass on this one...although it is better than the St. Agrestis which is horrible.
