The El Presidente, though it now lives in the shadow of Cuba’s much more famous drinks, such as the Daiquiri and the Mojito, is perhaps that Island’s most sophisticated contribution to the cocktail world. Coming across like a Caribbean Manhattan, its relative obscurity until fairly recently can be partially ascribed to a longstanding misunderstanding among American bartenders of using dry vermouth instead of the originally called for, sweeter blanc variety. Making that change, the drink transforms into something equally stiff and refreshing.
