Product details

First produced in Maryland in the 1890s, Pikesville Rye, along with the rest of the once-booming Maryland Rye industry, was shuttered by Prohibition. The brand reemerged after Prohibition and became the last standing Maryland Rye, as the rest of the industry's production had ceased. Now produced in Kentucky from extra-aged barrels stored in prime warehouse locations, Heaven Hill Distillery keeps this historic Maryland mark alive. Wonderfully delicate, with aromas of Boston creme pie, plantain, butternut squash, and brown sugar. Spicy, with a buttery sweetness to match and deep baked dark cherry flavor leading into a vanilla-tinged and spicy finish. Bottled at 55% abv.

  • Very smooth, and drinkable. You might think you were sippin' a fine Kentucky Bourbon.
  • Excellent value. Almost like drinking a Manhattan straight from the bottle.
  • Fantastic. Good nose, mouthfeel, taste and finish. Superb value.

Just a bit hot, at 110 proof, for an old fashioned. However, if you soften it in some other mixed drinks such as a manhattan or julep, it's lovely. It even works surprisingly well in a boulevardier. Great for the price!

A Rye that can run with the best Bourbons

At 110 proof, one would expect that this libation would be "hot." It's not. It's very smooth, and drinkable, and if you close your eyes, you might think that you were sippin' a fine Kentucky Bourbon. I don't have to spend the money on an aged Whistle Pig, when I can get an equally fine drink from this Pikesville Rye. Try it out.

Pikesville delivers

This is a really good "barely legal" rye (i.e. only 51% rye, the bare minimum to be classified as a rye). As a result of the limited amount of rye in here, this smells more like a bourbon with traditional caramel and oak. On the palate, the rye character asserts itself a bit more, layering floral honey notes and chocolate over some traditional bourbon flavors. Quite tasty, and even at a hearty 110 proof it isn't too hot and doesn't cry out for water. Excellent price for good near cask strength whisky. I will say however that if you're looking for an even better rye at not too much of a premium, grab a Willett 4 Year Rye. It costs about $15 more than this Pikesville but it is ridiculously good.

Really good rye!

Well to all who are looking for something alittle old school this will fit the bill. A little heavy on the top but has a nice finish with a mature flavor. Its a good rye for the price and has been around for many years.

Clear rye taste

This is a good whiskey with a distinct rye flavor. It's a great introduction into what makes rye taste like rye. I've had it straight and in cocktails, but at 110 proof it is a bit strong for my personal taste when straight.

Winter Warmer Rye. Best kept secret.

An after dinner dessert and relaxing by the fire sipper Rye, with notes of decadent semi-sweet chocolate, cardamom, nutmeg and allspice. Brown butter sugar cookies, and an homage to smoky roasted chestnuts.
A delightful pour for the for price, and a regular mainstay for any home bar.
Wishing you all a safe and Happy Holiday time.

Spicy

Nose: vanilla, caramel, spice, a little bit of ethanol but not much. Good balance between sweet and spice.

Palate: it hits you with nice bit of spice off the bat and then mellows out into a slightly sweet/caramel/oak that lingers nicely. Hardly any ethanol, very easy to drink, with a decent amount of flavor. The oak is really nice in this bottle and maybe I get almost like the taste of the sugar on top of a creme brulee.

Great under the radar rye

Excellent value and probably a few awards shy of being allocated.

This is almost like drinking a Manhattan straight from the bottle.

Best Rye for the price!

I think this has the most clear rye flavor of all of the rye whiskey I have tried, and that's a fair number!

If you like rye whiskey and haven't tried Pikesville - buy a bottle, you won't regret it.

Great rye!! Would highly recommend. I get cherry oak and little caramel. One of the best , a good little warm up for ECBP.
