Peat lovers rejoice with each of Bruichladdich's yearly releases of Octomore, one of the most heavily peated* malt whiskies available. 16.3 was distilled from Concerto barley grown on Islay on Bruichladdich's nearby Octomore farm. The barley was peated to 189.5 ppm (!!) and the whisky aged in a combination of ex-Bourbon, ex-Sauternes, and ex-PX Sherry casks for five years before bottling without chill filtration at 123.2 proof. The nose opens with a big hit of smoke followed by sea spray, iodine, vanilla, and earthy peat. On the palate, notes of apricot, tangerine, and apple mingle with woodsmoke and sea spray. The finish is very long and includes notes of tobacco, earthy peat, burnt fruit, and smoke.
