On the nose, iichiko Saiten is redolent with aromas of honeydew melon, white grape, pickled watermelon rind, and kabosu citrus. There are also hints of soy, white pepper, and rich barley notes. On the palate, Saiten has a strong start and a long finish. It exudes rich umami notes of jasmine tea, white peach, minerals, and earth with some citrus and a saline finish that beckons another sip. Its complex flavors offer exciting options for mixing in cocktails.

We were so surprised by the complexity and smoothness of this shochu, I had cheap shochu once and thought it wasn’t for me-I had no idea it could be soo good! A friend told us about Iichiko, so we tried this. It’s great, you can just pour it over some ice , but we’ve used it as a base for several cocktails. I like adding Citrus, Yuzu or fun Syrups with it. In fact, I liked it so much that I’ve sent it as gifts to some of my friends who’re big into Cocktails and already have The basics. Since Iichiko brand Shochu is just starting to be discovered And used by the best bartenders ( P.C.H. In SF and Angels Share in NY etc) It’s still something the average person hasn’t tried yet, so it makes a great gift if you’re not sure what your friend has already.
