Ulrich Amaro

Amaro Ulrich is a classic Italian bittersweet herbal liqueur originally formulated in 1854 by the botanist Dr. Domenico Ulrich. Today, the historic recipe is revived and produced in Alba, Italy, by the renowned Marolo Distillery. It is crafted using a traditional blend of 19 distinct herbs, fruits, flowers, and roots native to the Piedmontese Alps, giving it a flavor profile that features prominent top notes of gentian, anise, and wormwood, balanced by secondary notes of mint, citrus peel, dark caramel, and warming baking spices. Bottled at 32 percent alcohol by volume, it is traditionally consumed neat or over ice as a digestif after meals, but it is also widely used by mixologists in craft cocktails. Dr. Domenico Ulrich established his company as one of Italy's first industrial-scale processing facilities for aromatic herbs, and although the brand eventually faded from the commercial liquor market after changing hands during the 20th century, Lorenzo Marolo revived it in 2016 by studying the original archival recipes and fine-tuning them slightly for modern palates.
