Two New Heritage Barrel Picks
Selected on-site during a recent trip to Kentucky, these special store-exclusive barrels of Woodford Reserve Double Oaked (at Cask Strength) and Old Forester Single Barrel Barrel Strength represent two of the most sought-after heritage bourbon casks available today. Both showcase with aplomb why Kentucky holds such prestige in the whiskey world. They are lush, complex, and impressively powerful. We loved picking them out at the distilleries in Louisville, and we can't wait for you to experience them.
Woodford Reserve has long pioneered the iconic "double oaked" style, yet enthusiasts often miss out on its full potential because standard releases are proofed down. Historically, the only way to taste uncut Woodford was tracking down an elusive Batch Proof bottle—until now. As longtime fans, we jumped at the rare chance to select a private barrel bottled at true cask strength (96.38 proof). Re-casked into a second, heavily toasted oak barrel, this process aggressively extracts rich wood sugars without alcohol heat overpowering the profile, creating a truly decadent, full-flavored sipper.
During our selection trip to Old Forester in downtown Louisville, we tasted barrels across multiple warehouse floors. While top-floor barrels delivered raw heat, a barrel from Floor 5 of Warehouse J stole the show. It delivered signature Old Forester syrupiness and depth with just enough restraint to unlock a deliciously complex, herbaceous, and spicy character. Don't let "restrained" fool you, though—bottled at a roaring 129.6 proof, this single barrel brings all the bold intensity Old Forester is legendary for.
