Product details
El Jolgorio is a range of artisanal mezcal from Oaxaca, made from a wide variety of rare, unique agave species.
In Mexico, there are around fifty different species of agave used for mezcal production, each yielding a mezcal with its own distinct character. In 2010, the Cortés family begain buiding a collective of top mezcal distillers from around Oaxaca, with the goal of sharing the true culture and spirit of mezcal with the world. In all, El Jolgorio represents sixteen different families, working in ten different regions of Oaxaca, Mexico, each with its own special story. Every bottle is hand-marked with the specific details of each batch, to truly connect the drinker with the family behind the expression.
Although it is a genetic relative to agave Espadín, the most common agave used in mezcal production, agave Mexicano is less prevalent and, thus, is rarely used to produce mezcal. Like Espadín, it grows to be large, with a high concentration of sugars. Its broad, serrated leaves, or pencas, often bear dark tips. In some Zapotec dialects, this agave is called ‘doba-daan’ or ‘dob-daiin’. Mexicano Mezcals tend to be bold, deeply earthy, but also complex with hints of sweetness and fruit lurking behind the mineral earth character. Think of this as your Espadin upgrade.
This batch was made by Maestro Mezcalero Regulo Martinez Parada in Rio Seco, Santa Maria Zoquitlan, Oaxaca. The Mexicano agaves were grown for 8 years before harvesting, and the resulting mezcal is bottled at 48.8% abv.
