Nikka launched their "Discovery Series" last year with a real switcheroo, showcasing an un-peated Yoichi malt and a peated Miyagikyo, demonstrating how the two distillery profiles differ in subtle ways. For the 2022 edition, Nikka is highlighting the specific influence of an especially aromatic yeast on the whiskies, produced through low-temperature fermentation that brings to mind the fruity and floral world of sake. The Miyagikyo version reveals a delicate profile with plenty of that distillery's signature fruit. The nose is laden with pear, peach and apricot, with a hint of sweet barley sugars verging on marshmallows. On the palate, cereal flavors and fresh brioche are surrounded by wildflower honey. The long and silky finish lingers on chamomile as it slowly becomes a memory.
