Plantation Australia 2009 Palo Cortado Finish 12 Year Single Cask Rum
This fantastic single cask was produced at the Beenleigh distillery, just outside of Brisbane on the central east coast of Australia. Distilled on their pot still in 2009, it first aged in ex-bourbon casks for 11 years before being brought to France and aged another year in Ferrand Cognac barrels. It was then finished in Palo Cortado sherry barrels, a beloved sherry variety that is rarely seen used for aging spirits. It was bottled as a single cask without any added sugar, or "dosage", at 45% abv.
The nose is fruity on pear, mandarin jam, grapefruit zest and dried apricot. Spicy notes of pepper, cloves, cinnamon, anis and pistachio with oxidative and vinous touches of the palo cortado. Palate is well balanced between the rum, oak and the sherry, showing chocolate, almond, cherry, blueberry, banana, bitter orange and some elegant rose notes. Very unique, very tasty pot still rum.
