Sugar and Spice and Everything Nice. Sweet Liqueurs trace their lineage to European herbal medicines, which were usually infused into alcohol to stabilize them, and over the years, sweetened to make them more easily palatable. Eventually they became an after dinner tradition in their own right, made from any combination of herbs, spices, or fruits. In the age of the cocktail they became beloved for mixing with other spirits to make totally new creations, well removed from their original medicinal intentions (or are they?).
